They say Google uses its search monopoly to force publishers into feeding the AI answers that replaced their own traffic. On August 25th, Google was in court trying to get the whole thing thrown out. Their argument? AI Overviews is just a product improvement. And that old deal, “you let us crawl your site, we send you traffic” was history. The judge wasn't having it. He said product improvements don't get a free pass from antitrust law. And that this one got built on top of the very publishers it takes from. When an AI Overview shows up on a search, clicks through to the actual websites drop by 58 percent. Some publishers lost over 40 percent of their traffic in a single year.
