The Publishers Who Built Google Are Now Suing It #shorts
20262 min
Penske Media, that's Rolling Stone, Variety, Billboard, Deadline is suing Google.
They say Google uses its search monopoly to force publishers into feeding the AI answers that replaced their own traffic.
On August 25th, Google was in court trying to get the whole thing thrown out.
Their argument? AI Overviews is just a product improvement.
And that old deal, “you let us crawl your site, we send you traffic” was history.
The judge wasn't having it.
He said product improvements don't get a free pass from antitrust law.
And that this one got built on top of the very publishers it takes from.
See OpenAI and Perplexity are out there paying publishers for content.
Google is getting the same content for nothing.
Now here's why this is your problem, not just theirs.
When an AI Overview shows up on a search, clicks through to the actual websites drop by 58 percent.
Some publishers lost over 40 percent of their traffic in a single year.
But there’s a part nobody in this fight is telling you.
The visitors that do come from AI answers convert 8 times higher than regular search traffic.
And 62 percent faster.
So the play isn't waiting on a judge.
It's making sure that when an AI answers a question in your space, you're one of the sources it pulls from.
Most businesses have no idea if that's happening, because it never shows up in normal analytics.
That's what Ubersuggest's AI Search Visibility tracking is for.
It shows whether your brand is appearing inside answers from ChatGPT and Gemini.
This fight is just getting started. Follow and I'll tell you what it changes next.
