An early morning walk down the quiet streets of Oharai Machi on the approach to Ise Jingu, Japan's most important shrine, located in Mie Prefecture. Oharai Machi, where we start this morning's walk, is lined by reconstructed traditional wooden shops. During the day it is very lively, with restaurants and eateries to refresh visitors before or after entering the forested shine grounds. At this early hour there are not many people, but the birds are awake and treat us with their song. Ise Shrine receives many visitors from around the country and gets very crowded during the day. In the Edo Period it is estimated that 1 in 10 Japanese people made a pilgrimage to the shrine at some point. It is also the start of the Iseji Route, a 170km section of the Kumano Kodo connecting Ise Shrine to the three grand shrines on the Kii Peninsula.
