Today we archive a very special and rare PlayStation 2 horror game. Haunting Ground is often compared to Rule of Rose as the style and protagonist look somewhat alike, but in terms of gameplay they are very different. Haunting Ground was, just like Rule of Rose, quite a big flop since it came after the huge success of Resident Evil 4 and got mostly overlooked. But Haunting Ground actually offers some very unique mechanics and in other ways was ahead of its time when it came to an AI enemy that would follow you around. You play as Fiona who wakes up in a large castle. Not long after that she finds a dog who will help her solve various puzzles and fight enemies if you get cornered. Throughout the game's story you will face off against different types of enemies and each will travel and search for you in real time. This always gives you an uneasy feeling as you could run into them if you were not careful. They are also really presistant and you could not shake them easily once they had you in their sights. The atmosphere is also really cool and the puzzles are very original as you often need to create these plates with words on them in order to progress. Triggering specific cutscenes or events can also enhance your enemies or initiate a chase sequence and this game really got me sweating and screaming multiple times. Especially the second enemy was very creepy and scary. Haunting Ground can be a bit frustrating with its controls and there is a bit more backtracking than I would like, but overall it was a great experience. It is one of those games that would really benefit from a remake to work out its errors and provide a unique and polished game unlike any other. #hauntingground #playstation2 #retrogames #retro #retrogame #horrorgame #capcom #demento
