We watched the sky disappear, one floor at a time. The cities stopped spreading outward. They climbed. Tower upon tower, layer upon layer, until the horizon became a memory we told each other at night, like a legend. Down below, light is a rumor. Streets born in shadow, where the sun has never laid more than a hesitant finger on the pavement. Walls black with time, structures that still carry, beneath their skin of new metal, the scars of the old settlements we built over without ever quite erasing them. Up above, another world breathes another air. Light there is full, almost insolent. People live long, live far, far from the ground, far from each other. Millions of souls stacked one on top of another. And yet, we had never been so alone. Faces crossed every day, never remembered. Silence learned from childhood, in elevators, in hallways. We stopped asking who we were — and started asking what floor we lived on. Below, necessity wrote its own laws. Networks in the shadows, a survival negotiated between neighbors who, at least, still knew each other. Above, order reigned, cold, sustained not by virtue, but by the absence of need. We built these cities to bring us closer together.
