Why we can’t stop thinking about aliens | The Gray Area 48 min Walking through forest in the rain by volcanic mountain stream and fumaroles before hiking trail to Lake Onami on the slope of Mt. Kirishima in Kagoshima, Japan. I was hoping that there were a trail from Maruo Falls, the waterfall with milky white water in the intro, but unfortunately I couldn't find out how the various trails on the mountain all connect. Instead we take a quick look further upstream along the Mauro Scenic Nature Path. The stream is unlike anything I've ever seen, with more milky water, stained white rocks, and a small natural hot spring which is said to be the oldest on the mountain. A couple hundred meters upstream there are a number of fumaroles billowing out sulphuric gas and steam, which also is where the water in the stream gets its color. From there it's a short drive up the mountain to the trailhead and on to Lake Onami, the largest volcano summit crater lake in Japan. Unfortunately it was covered in cloud so all we see is a white void where the mountain erupted 45,000 years ago. The trail got to be too tight for my umbrella so I stopped the camera about a third of the way around the crater. I circled it before making my way down, not once catching sight of the lake, a good excuse to come back someday.
