Sawing a Dam in Half (on Purpose) 21 분 In the rural landscapes of the Nièvre region in central France, Petit Copeau undertakes the extreme renovation of a small abandoned stone house whose origins reflect the practical architecture of the French countryside rather than formal architectural ambition. Measuring only around 75 square meters, the building initially appears modest in scale, yet the renovation quickly reveals the extraordinary complexity hidden beneath its deteriorated surfaces. Decades of improvised modifications, aging masonry, shifting timber structures, outdated technical systems, and accumulated repairs transformed the house into a constantly evolving technical challenge where no wall, floor, opening, or structural connection could be trusted without verification. Rather than simply restoring the building cosmetically, the project becomes a complete reconstruction of the house’s internal logic, forcing historical rural construction methods to coexist with contemporary standards of insulation, waterproofing, ventilation, plumbing, electrical infrastructure, and spatial comfort. What makes the renovation particularly remarkable is the way it combines modern construction techniques with economic improvisation and handcrafted fabrication. Working largely alone over multiple years, Petit Copeau simultaneously assumes the roles of demolition contractor, carpenter, electrician, plumber, welder, tiler, designer, and project manager. Industrial building systems designed for perfectly standardized environments must constantly be adapted to irregular historical geometry, while financial constraints push the project toward self-fabrication, reclaimed materials, custom carpentry, and workshop-built solutions. As a result, the house evolves into a hybrid architectural object where exposed historical beams coexist with modern insulation systems, handmade furniture integrates seamlessly beside contemporary appliances, and custom-built details replace expensive prefabricated alternatives.
