Humanity disappeared 300 years ago. Every record says humans are extinct. But ORIN, a lone machine, refuses to believe that humanity is truly gone. Together with LYRA, he returns to a desert-covered Earth and discovers a massive gate left behind by humans. The gate reacts to ORIN… but it refuses to open. To understand why, ORIN travels to a distant research world and learns about a living machine with a beating mechanical heart. If he takes that heart, he may be able to open the human gate. But when ORIN finally finds the creature, he discovers that the heart is not just a key. It belongs to someone who is trying to protect what is left. This is a complete original sci-fi story about a machine searching for humans, a mysterious gate buried under the desert, and the final question: What does it really mean to have a heart?
