How Disney Built A Realistic Lightsaber 17 min Positano is built into a cliff rather than on top of one. The village sits in a near-vertical fold of the Amalfi Coast in Campania, and its roughly 4,000 residents live in houses stacked in tiers down the rock face, painted in the pinks, ochres and whites that make the place recognisable from the sea. There is essentially one road: a single one-way lane that enters high as Viale Pasitea, hairpins down through the village, and leaves along Via Cristoforo Colombo. Everything else is stairs. That geography is why goods here still move by hand or by scooter, and why reaching Spiaggia Grande, the main beach, means a descent of several hundred steps past other people's terraces. For a village this small it was once a serious maritime power, a trading port under the Republic of Amalfi whose merchants grew wealthy running ships across the Mediterranean in the 16th and 17th centuries. Steam shipping ended that, and by the late 1800s much of the population had emigrated to America; the seafront lane called Via Positanesi d'America is named for them. Positano was close to abandoned before writers and artists rediscovered it in the mid-20th century, and it has been famous ever since. The dome of Santa Maria Assunta, tiled in yellow, green and blue majolica, marks the centre, and the light linen clothing sold in the shops around it, Moda Positano, was invented here in the 1950s. .
