An early morning walk along a river, from the coast to the flowing streams and cascades of Yokko Gorge on the island of Yakushima, Japan. We start this morning at the mouth of the Nagata River, where its water meets the breaking waves of the open ocean. From there we walk through a small coastal neighborhood, a park, and into freshly flooded rice fields on our way to the gorge. I stopped filming for a moment to have a conversation with a local farmer who tends the fields, a very nice fellow. Yokko Gorge is reached on a short path through a mossy forest, and is one of many impressive water features on Yakushima. I was hoping the trail would continue further along the river, but it seems it ends at the cascades and pool. There is a trail that continues up away from the river and into the mountains, but that will have to wait for another time. After I turned the camera off I took a dip in the calm pool next to the cascades, it was very refreshing.
