In this new episode, a 4K steampunk airship voyage across four nations of the Old World, the Mountain Nation, the Stone Coast, the Tree Nation and the Marble Islands. An art nouveau dreamscape with original music composed by Martin Misenta, creator of Retrofutura: one full day aboard the survey ship that redraws the General Atlas every five years. Every five years the Atlas casts off. It carries surveyors, and its only work is to bring the General World Atlas up to date, one nation at a time, and climb back at night to the station that keeps the finished world. DAWN. THE MOUNTAIN NATION. A country of villages built into the cliffs, white houses and blue glass observatories clinging to the dry rock, their domes turned to the sky like instruments. Mountain people go about in high wool collars and long coats against the cold, unhurried on the white terraces. On one of them an old woman sits with the automaton that has kept her company for thirty years, while far below the flocks are still moving between the canyon walls. MIDDAY. THE STONE COAST. A wet country of grey stone and pale iron, sea casinos and pavilions standing out in the water on their own foundations, all curved glass and wrought metal darkened by the salt. Ladies pass along the promenade under black umbrellas, dressed in long furred coats, while walking engines move down the shoreline track with their lamps already lit at noon. Out past the sea wall a whale rises once and is gone. AFTERNOON. THE TREE NATION. A country that lives in the canopy, golden pavilions and balconies grown around trunks a thousand years old, ornament everywhere, half art nouveau and half living wood. The people move slowly, at home among the branches. The Atlas Airship passes high over the crowns, tracing the architecture of the leaves. EVENING. THE MARBLE ISLANDS. A warm country of white marble and open colonnades above a blue sea, terraces and bathing pools cut into the headlands, a place that dresses in linen and takes its time. The archipelago opens below the hull, and for one hour the instruments are covered and no one works. Dinner is laid under the pines, and the last measurement of the day is taken with the sun already on the water. Then the Atlas turns and begins to climb. NIGHT. THE STATION. Above the clouds waits the great Meridian station, a floating palace of glass and brass lit like a city, where the surveys of every nation are gathered and kept. The Atlas moors for the first time all day. In the Map Room, under evening dress and chandeliers, four globes turn slowly over a ring of water while the year's findings are shown, and an old cartographer holds the new sheet up to the light to see whether the coast has moved. At midnight the atlas closes. In five years it opens again. Ornament and quiet engineering, belle époque architecture that never stopped growing, surrealist skies with no war under them.
