Walking a nature trail via crater lakes and volcanic forests in the Ebino Highlands in Miyazaki, Japan. This was a spur of the moment decision, a last walk on my way out of Kyushu. In my haste I didn't realize that there are two Mt. Io's in Japan, one here, and one in Hokkaido. They both have active fumaroles, nature centers, and trails by the vents. It turns out the trail at this location has been closed for more than ten years due to dangerous gases and general volcanic activity. Luckily there was still a nice trail through the forest with views of three crater lakes through the fog and clouds. At one lake construction was being done in preparation for a ceremony so there is the incongruous sound of an electric vacuum on the mountaintop.
