The Romans built grand holiday villas here — the most impressive of which, the Grotte di Catullo, still stands at the tip of the promontory and ranks as one of the largest Roman residential sites in all of northern Italy. In the 13th century, the Della Scala (Scaligeri) family of Verona built the Rocca Scaligera — a rare lake fortress with its own port — which still guards the only land entrance to the old town.
